Planting for bees

Hi folks - this weekend as our Indian Summer melts into an Indian Autumn, we put in a lot of work in the garden.  Following a friend's advice, we bought a selection of daffodil bulbs (€40 for ~ 600).  Not only will they bring a beautiful look to the garden and driveways throughout February, March, April, and possibly even May, they should help to provide the bees with some food in the new season when there's little else in flower.  Not surprisingly, my back is aching and my hands are blistered!

The dogs helped us decide exactly where to place the bulbs.

It's that time of the year to clear out the old beds and we took the opportunity for a final cutting of the sweet-peas (lathyrus odoratus) for indoors - this year they've been amazing - I'm not sure why.

Today we took the dogs on a long walk along an abandoned canal nearby.  A beautiful afternoon in the fantastic autumn sunshine.  Elva had her camera so we were able to record some of the vibrant-coloured berries that were on show in their full glory.

The common ivy is still in flower so the bees are being spoiled with all this extra pollen.

Great pictures, Cliff!

Seeing your pictures has me in the mood to work in my yard! I have a low-voltage light set for my yard that's been sitting here for awhile and I need to get it put together.

Maybe this weekend. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration! :)

Cool! I have three bags from B&Q Athlone to go in any day now :-) 3 for €13 wasn't bad with 70 in each bag ~6c each. Have you seen the price of hyacinths!!! A quarter ton of crocuses is what I'm really after...

Hi Cliff. Fall is a great time for planting. The bees will certainly appreciate your efforts come spring.

Those are great-looking dogs and I couldn't help but notice the Toyota Forerunner in the background. I have one exactly like it. Small world :)

I was hoping to get my bulbs in soon but we are actually getting some snow and it's still so early. Hopefully it will warm back up and get more seasonable. Cute little helper you have! :)

Cliff, those are truly happy photos you've shared today.

I hope all goes well with you out there in the Emerald Isle. The weather here in the Scots Borders has been quite wonderful for the past few weeks.

Hi Cliff! The weather here has been so bad for the bees. It has been cold and raining for 2 weeks now. Taking off their winter mite treatments today and thinking we are going to put a super of honey back on the light hives, as they haven't been able to get out to build up stores. We have plenty of honey. Want to make sure the poor girls have enough! Happy Indian autumn to you!

I really enjoyed this post. The photos are lovely and the dogs look happy.
Yesterday was beautiful here in N. Alabama, USA and I spent the whole day outside puttering around the place. I dug up some daffodil bulbs and Iris bulbs that were in desperate need of being thinned. I will share them with friends and I will continue to scatter them around our property as well.
